The Russians Just Completely Trolled Donald Trump’s Clueless White House (VIDEO)

Russians Gloat in Oval Office Photo-Op With Trump

Russian diplomats happened to visit the White House one day after President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. The attaché, led by Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov, seemed to mock the director’s dismissal and flaunt their White House access. When asked by NBC’s Andrea Mitchell if the firing would damper talks between Lavrov and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Lavrov responded with mocked incredulity.

Was he fired?  You’re kidding!  You’re kidding!

Lavrov then shook his head, as if he couldn’t be bothered by the question. Tillerson silently waved off the press and the two exited the room. The exchange between the press and Lavrov was then posted to Twitter by the official Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs twitter account @mfa-russia with a transcript of Lavrov’s tongue-in-cheek response to Mitchell’s question.

The Foreign Ministry continued publicizing Lavrov’s DC tour, posting pictures of him  in the Oval office with President Trump and another Russian diplomat, Russian Ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak. Kislyak, incidentally, is the diplomat disgraced former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn called to reassure him that President Barack Obama deporting Russian operatives wouldn’t change the opportunity to reach an agreement about sanctions. In a peculiar show of favoritism, American press was barred from the meeting. The only photographs of the gathering were from the Russian News Agency, TASS. The Russian Foreign Ministry, once again, bragged about Lavrov’s DC visit via twitter.

While the photo speaks volumes about the budding bromance between the Trump Administration and the Kremlin, the Russian translation of the caption is pretty benign.

Oval Office meeting between S. Lavrov and D. Trump

What might not be  benign, however, is a hashtag embedded in the tweet.  links to a Russian language twitter account run by the Russian Embassy called ‘Russia in America.’ For all intents and purposes, it seems to be a Russian government run propaganda site.

@RusembUSA also posted several pictures of both Lavrov and Kislyak with President Trump. Since the American press was denied access to the Oval Office meeting, the only images available were through TASS. In fact, when the White House released a text-only description of Trump’s visit with the Russians, it made no mention of Trump meeting with Kislyak, the diplomat reportedly in talks with Trump’s campaign before the election.

In one final epic troll, Russia played the White House like a fiddle and officials didn’t realize it until after the photo-ops had taken place. According to a senior West Wing staffer, the Russian detail misrepresented the duty of the photographer, implying that it was the foreign minister’s official photographer. In fact, it was a Russian news photographer there to gather photos for worldwide press distribution.

We were not informed by the Russians that their official photographer was dual-hatted and would be releasing the photographs on the state news agency..The tricked us. They lie.

So just to clarify, the White House allowed a photographer access to the president in the Oval Office while speaking with Russian foreign agents based solely on credentials provided by the Russians.  Let that sink in.
