Instantly Iconic Photo of Girl Scout Confronting Neo-Nazis Goes Viral

girl Scout stands up to Neo-Nazis like a hero

On Monday, a May Day rally was held by neo-Nazis in Brno, the Czech Republic’s second biggest city after the capital Prague. Counter-protesters gathereed to stand against the right-wing extremists, and among them were a number of Scouts. 16-year-old Lucie Myslíková was among the group, and Vladimir Čičmanec, a computer programmer and amateur photographer, captured her in an instantly iconic photo that has gone viral.

The photo shows Myslíková standing up to a demonstrator as he gestures angrily and screams at her, while she only smiles and fearlessly shrugs back. Čičmanec, who took the photo, told CNN

“She was standing tall and she’s 16 years old and she stood proud and made some profound arguments.”

The photo is amazing; it shows a 16-year-old Girl Scout calmly looking back at a clearly angry right-wing demonstrator dressed in black clothes, wearing sunglasses and a shaved head gesturing at her. The exchange between the neo-Nazi and her caught a friend of Čičmanec’s attention and that is when the photo was taken. Čičmanec also said about the encounter

“We wanted to show the neo-Nazis that they are not welcome here. This year the counter-protest was to make fun of and to troll the Nazis… I didn’t hear all of their exchange but they were talking about the concept of nations and nation-states, immigration, refugees. She tried to explain to him that nationalism makes no sense because we are all people and should not be treated differently based on some arbitrary distinctions.”

The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) also shared the now viral photo on its Facebook page with the message

“People from all walks of life, and #Scouts among them, came to the streets during an extreme right march yesterday, to express their support for values of diversity, peace and understanding. Creating a better world!”
This girl is definitely the face of courage.
