The President Exhibited Pure Trump Class This Morning, Calling Jim Comey a “Slimeball”

On the last day of this month, the Office of the President will officially be 229 years old. Over two-plus centuries, Americans have often found solace, wisdom, and inspiration in the words of the forty-three men who have held that office. Among the more famous examples:

“Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all.”George Washington, 1st President of the United States

“A house divided against itself cannot stand”Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States.

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”Franklin Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States.

“Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”John Kennedy, 35th President of the United States.

“The future rewards those who press on. I don’t have time to feel sorry for myself. I don’t have time to complain. I’m going to press on.”Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States.

And then there’s Donald Trump. He began his Friday with arguably the most unpresidential statement in the long, storied history of presidential communication. His target? Former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey:

While this was typical Trumpian bloviation, sixteen minutes later he completed his thought:

Yes. It took Donald Trump sixteen minutes to figure out he wanted to call the nation’s former top cop a “slimeball”.

While this will undoubtedly inspire his rabid base of true believers, it is undoubtedly another lowering of the bar for what we can expect from the highest position in the land. Forget about the fact that Comey was once lauded by Trump for having a lot of guts” when it benefited his campaign. Think about the people he has NOT used language such as “slimeball” about — when it would at least have been warranted, if not presidential:

  • White Nationalists who killed a counterdemonstrator
  • Vladimir Putin
  • Recep Erdoğan
  • Rodrigo Duterte
  • Paul Manafort

The only solace one who respects the tradition and position of the president can take is that there’s only one direction to go from rock bottom.
