Twitter Trolls McConnell As ‘She Persisted’ Becomes Feminist Battle Cry

‘She Was Warned. She Was Given An Explanation. Nevertheless, She Persisted’

She Persisted. With a simple statement, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell gave twitter a hashtag that instantly became a mantra for the tens of millions of Americans who continue to perceive the modern Republican Party as hostile towards the interests of women.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) was attempting to read a 1986 letter from Coretta Scott King, widow of civil rights icon Martin Luther King, on the Senate floor. Warren, like the 47 other Democrats, was imploring Congress not to confirm Attorney General Nominee Jeff Sessions. The King letter was sent to Congress when Sessions was nominated to the federal judiciary over thirty years ago, and critical of Sessions’ perceived racial bias in his professional responsibilities.

But McConnell invoked a little-used procedural tactic, Senate Rule XIX, which states:

No Senator in debate shall, directly or indirectly, by any form of words impute to another Senator or to other Senators any conduct or motive unworthy or unbecoming a Senator.

In silencing Warren, McConnell said:

“She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”

And As Expected, Twitter Had A Field Day

McConnell’s tone and choice of words seem as if they were custom-made for a viral hashtag. And as usual, twitter did not disappoint.

Comparisons were quickly drawn to other “Persistent” women…

Including both fictional and symbolic ones…

There were clever suggestions…

And tweets that remind us just how inspiring persistence can be:

Less than three weeks after the Women’s March On Washington became the largest one-day protest in American history, McConnell can not be pleased with these optics. In an attempt to feed red meat to his base, he reinforced every negative perception citizens have about the GOP’s views on women. And coming on the same day that the Senate confirmed Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary, it looks even worse.
