Desperate for Cover on Russia, Trump Flails for Excuse to Fire Sessions

A Week Long Public assault on the Attorney General Continues

At this point, I assume we can all agree with the below statement from today’s Associated Press report regarding Pres. Trump’s repeated public criticisms of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. It’s referring to the A.G.’s decision to recuse himself from the investigation into possible Russian collusion during the 2016 presidential campaign by Trump officials:

Trump has seethed about Sessions’ decision for months, viewing it as disloyal — arguably the most grievous offense in the president’s mind …

In light of this observation by the AP, I’m left questioning if the President has forgotten that Sessions was the first Senator to endorse him with a risky early backing in the 2016 race? If not, where is Trump’s loyalty? It seems that he demands a brand that is not reciprocated toward anyone serving him when it comes to the investigation into the Russian scandal.

It all began with the now infamous July 19th interview published by the New York Times where Trump reported saying,

How do you take a job and then recuse yourself? If he would have recused himself before the job, I would have said, “Thanks, Jeff, but I can’t, you know, I’m not going to take you.” It’s extremely unfair, and that’s a mild word, to the president.

It seemed that these remarks would have resulted in an immediate resignation by Sessions, but it did not. Rather Sessions said during a press conference the following day:

I’m totally confident that we can continue to run this office in an effective way.

Trump’s criticism of Sessions in the NYT interview was echoed Monday in a tweet referring to the Attorney General as “beleaguered”:

Then today, the harsh attacks went even further continuing with:

So what will the next disloyal move for Trump be? According to the AP, the Commander-in-Chief has spoken with advisers about firing Sessions, and even that move has stalwart supporter and frequent adviser to Trump, Newt Gingrich, saying,

Anybody who is good at team building would suggest to the president that attacking members of your team rattles the whole team.

So why should anyone offer their absolute loyalty to the President when you are seen as so expendable? Former FBI Director James Comey bravely stood up to the bullying tactics of Trump after his dismissal, and I’m sure he sleeps well at night. Will Jeff Sessions sleep tonight if he plans to remain Trump’s Attorney General tomorrow? We can only wait and see.
