Democrats Could Flip This Red State to Blue — Thanks to This New Progressive All Star
Progressive-backed Stacey Abrams has won the nomination for the highest office in Georgia. Abrams will now be running against Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle or Secretary of State Brian Kemp. This is because both Republicans tied during Tuesday’s primary They will have a run-off in July to decide.
Stacey Abrams’ win is alreadybeing seen as an uphill battle. Alisyn Camerota on CNN detailed those challenges the nominee is facing. First, she said that 58 percent of Georgia is white. The host probably meant white voters. She explained that some of those white voters were in rural areas.
The anchor added that those voters had already given up on the Democratic Party. Camerota showed a graphic that displayed a numerical challenge. Democrats got 553,397 votes against the GOP’s 607,660 turnouts for the primary.
Stacey Abrams Confronts Georgia Challenges for Democrats
Abrams says that even with a lower number, the turnout is unprecedented for Democrats. She said that she would be building a new coalition of voters. Abrams’ plan is to focus on every kind of Democrat and free-thinking independent.
As a progressive, she’s hoping that the coalition she builds will be an improvement on the “old guard.” Stacey said that the Party hasn’t had candidates that did the job of lifting up every voice. She pointed out that with those voters, there was more than enough for the Party to get to victory.
Stacey Abrams was the minority leader for the Georgia House of Representatives. The Georgia congresswoman also spoke with the PBS News Hour. She provided some insight into how she won the primary.
For 11 months, she said that her campaign ran a concentrated effort to engage with voters. Abrams said they ran a bold and detailed campaign where she stuck to the issues. In other words, old-fashioned campaigning.
The anchor pointed out that Abrams had energized non-voters to vote. Recalling the Bernie Sanders’ progressive campaign, he too attracted non-voters
Here is Stacey Abrams’ interview with the PBS News Hour:
Let’s take a closer look at her message. The nominee said that she was focused on education and jobs. Especially, investing in small business ventures as well as expanding Medicare. All of those issues, especially Medicare, are issues that conservatives have aggressively tried to malign against Democrats.
In various interviews, Stacey has said that she’s proud of the bad grades she’s gotten from the National Rifle Association (NRA). Despite the mass shootings at schools and elsewhere, the NRA has continued its support for firearms, lobbying against restrictive gun laws.
Their public message has been to blame anything else but the guns. Those who have advocated for gun reform to reduce violence are generally targeted by Republicans, saying that Democrats were trying to take away their 2nd Amendment rights to bear arms.
Stacey was asked about Georgia’s Republican base in an interview with The Guardian;
My job is not to worry about the Republicans. They are going to try to out-Trump each other and prove who can be more xenophobic and more pro-gun. That’s not my narrative.
Stacey Abrams’ race also ran in opposition against her own Democratic Party who had their support behind another candidate. Infighting between progressives and Democrats has been a reported issue. But Democrats have also pointed to some of the infighting on the other side as well.
In some cases, they’ve even suggested that the battles among them have been “bloody.” Plain and simple, Stacey Abrams says that Georgia is actually a blue state that is in a state of confusion. If she wins as Governor, then flipping the state blue will be one of the most important wins for the Party.
