The New Acting FBI Director Just Blew Massive Holes in Trump’s Excuse to Fire James Comey
“Director Comey enjoyed broad support within the FBI.”
Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe contradicted White House claims that the recently fired director James Comey had lost the support of the Bureau. Speaking at a White House Press Briefing, Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters:
“Most importantly, the rank-and-file of the FBI had lost confidence in their director.”
Yet McCabe told the Senate Intelligence Committee hearing that was not the case in the slightest. When asked by Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) if Huckabee Sanders’ portrayal was accurate, McCabe said:
That is not accurate. I can tell you sir that I worked very, very closely with Director Comey. From the moment that he started at the FBI I was his executive assistant director of national security at that time. I worked for him working the Washington field office and of course, I served as deputy for the last year. I can tell you that I hold Director Comey in the highest regard. I have the highest respect for his considerable abilities and integrity. And it has been the greatest privilege and honor of my professional life to work with him. I can tell you also that Director Comey enjoyed broad support within the FBI. And still does to this day.
The acting director’s testimony only adds to the firestorm that’s threatening the president’s ability to govern. Calls for an independent prosecutor have increased — with even Republicans joining the chorus. The echoes of Watergate resounded so loudly that “Nixonian” began to trend on twitter. Various media outlets, including those friendly to the administration, reported widespread chaos within the West Wing. And Trump’s attempt to change the narrative on social media backfired in an epic fashion.
With McCabe contradicting yet another White House-contrived narrative, it wouldn’t be a wise bet to assume the Comey fallout will be ending anytime soon.
