BOMBSHELL: NRA’s Favorite ‘Academic’ Is A Fraud, New Evidence Reveals (VIDEO)

He’s a pro-gun author, columnist and the darling of the NRA — and he’s considered to be a right-wing academic.  But ten years ago, he tanked his career after using falsified data and relying on dubious studies.

After the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, John Lott has managed to stage a career comeback, Think Progress reports. He contends that more guns = safer societies, and that makes him one of the NRA’s go-to “experts.”

John Lott may be a prolific academic, but he’s not above using fraud when necessary

As Devin Hughes and Evan DeFilippis write in Think Progress, Lott is a prolific “academic” when it comes to the gun control debate. He fires off (no pun intended) weekly columns in local newspapers about the horrors of gun-free zones and has published hugely popular books on the benefits of right-to-carry laws. His newest book The War on Guns has been praised by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Newt Gingrich.

When he fell from grace a decade ago, his claim that more guns lead to more safety was formally debunked by a National Research Council panel, and he was also caught publishing studies with enormous statistical errors on a number of occasions. And an investigation found that he had very likely fabricated an entire survey about defensive gun use.

Then there was the mysterious case of Mary Rosh, an online commentator who said she was a former student of Lott’s. She kept writing about how wonderful he was until a blogger discovered that Rosh was, in fact, Lott himself.

And after that, Lott was swallowed by obscurity.

“I probably shouldn’t have done it—I know I shouldn’t have done it—but it’s hard to think of any big advantage I got except to be able to comment fictitiously,” Lott said. He’s an economist who has held senior research positions at Yale and the University of Chicago.

But after the killings at Sandy Hook, Lott sprang back into the public eye once again.

Maybe some in the media weren’t aware of Lott’s previous misdeeds, or perhaps some believed he had turned a new leaf when he founded the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC), but journalists, perennially desperate for a knowledgeable pro-gun academic, provided him with a renewed platform.

Over the past few years, Lott and the CPRC have been cited by scores of outlets and he has been touted as an authority on gun violence statistics in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, Politifact, CBS, CNN, Fox News and too many others.

But the media’s taking a wrong turn by listening to this “academic.” Instead of turning a new leaf, he’s merely using the same moldy one as before. Once again, he’s back to deceiving the public. As Think Progress has investigated Lott and his organization over the years, it has uncovered a number of new ethical violations that range from bizarre to the completely fraudulent.

Let’s take a look:

The peer-reviewed study that doesn’t actually exist. Last fall, his website proudly proclaimed it published a study in a peer-reviewed journal. The headline on his website? “CPRC Has New Refereed Publication in Econ Journal Watch: Explaining a Bias in Recent Studies on Right-to-Carry Laws.” His website provided a downloadable copy of the paper and also promoted its appearance in the economic journal.

Now that would certainly seem like a huge win, wouldn’t it? This would be a shot in the arm for his reputation and that of the CPRC. Not to mention that it would be one of few publications in recent years in which Lott attempted to publish something that would be subject to peer-review.

The only problem? It never happened. This paper was never published in the Econ Journal Watch.

The head editor of the journal told Hughes and DeFilippis that Lott’s paper had initially been considered for publication, but was rejected. And the issue of the journal that Lott said it was published in has no trace of his paper. Hughes and Defilippis say it’s impossible that Lott didn’t know his paper was rejected, and it would take little effort to correct the uploaded paper and the post on CPRC’s website. They conclude that this was clearly fraud.

What else has Lott done, according to Raw Story?

He often likes to say that there’s no difference between the frequency of mass shootings in Europe and the U.S. That’s completely false, but he continues to say this anyway, and deliberately misreads the center’s own analyses, lying about the number of deaths in “gun-free zones.”

And once again, he’s resorted to posing as either a fan or a supporter online. That’s probably the most colorful thing he’s done lately.

In August 2014, FoxNews.com published the story of teenager Taylor Woolrich, who is desperately trying to escape and protect herself from a stalker who has ruined her life. It wasn’t long before this poor girl’s story went viral and became a sounding board for gun activists

But Woolrich, a living, breathing human being, told BuzzFeed she didn’t write the story. Lott hijacked the story and wrote the piece from her perspective while at the same time plagiarizing an editorial he wrote for Daily Caller nearly word-for-word.

“I was trying to be brave and just speak up,” Woolrich said. “I didn’t realize I was being turned into an NRA puppet.”

My heart goes out to Woolrich. She must feel like she’s being victimized twice.

As an academic, Lott is clearly a very intelligent man. How sad that he resorts to this instead of utilizing the actual, true research.
