President Obama's Touching Message to Sasha and Malia Is Exactly What the Nation Needs to Heal

President Obama’s Touching Message to Sasha and Malia Is Exactly What the Nation Needs to Heal

Barack Obama Had A Tough Job

That Donald Trump has been elected President is hard enough for any father to explain to his daughters, but it must have been especially tough for Barack Obama to explain to his girls.

After all, what does a man who has lived his life respecting strong women – and the first African American president this country has ever seen – say about turning the keys to the Oval Office over to a man who openly admits to grabbing women’s genitalia without permission and who has been openly endorsed by the KKK?

Like his wife, when they go low, Barack Obama has always gone high. What he told his girls, Malia, 18, and Sasha, 15, was no different. Using the wisdom, grace, gravity and eloquence that his marked his tenure as leader of our nation, Barack Obama told his daughters the following.

“People are complicated. Societies and cultures are really complicated. This is not mathematics; this is biology and chemistry. These are living organisms, and it’s messy. And your job as a citizen and as a decent human being is to constantly affirm and lift up and fight for treating people with kindness and respect and understanding.”

He told his daughters to face bigotry head on and to “constantly affirm and lift up and fight for treating people with kindness and respect and understanding.”

Obama Spoke With Cautious Optimism…And A Dose Of Realism

But even as Obama spoke with cautious optimism and certain strength to his daughters, he admitted openly that the way before them would be tough. Even so, they should press on.

“And you should anticipate that at any given moment there’s going to be flare-ups of bigotry that you may have to confront, or may be inside you and you have to vanquish. And it doesn’t stop…You don’t get into a fetal position about it. You don’t start worrying about apocalypse. You say, okay where are the places where I can push to keep it moving forward?”

He could be talking to all of us.

Let’s keep pushing – both against all of Trump’s and the GOP’s backwards ideas…and forward, as well.
