Like Father, Like Daughter: Ivanka Trump’s Jewelry Business In Trouble For Failing To Pay Taxes
Business is not booming for first daughter Ivanka Trump. On top of recent losses as retailers drop her brands and people boycott companies associated with the Trumps, it turns out she is having tax troubles too. It must run in the family.
Although Ivanka said she stepped back from her businesses to help her father run his administration, she is still listed as chief executive officer in the business filings of her companies in both New York and Florida. Legally speaking, being listed on the business filings means she is still considered the responsible manager of the businesses, despite her pledge to step down. Both she and her father have said, sometimes through spokespeople, that they are no longer involved in their businesses but have not provided documentation to prove those claims.
The President and his family have blurred the lines between their new political work and their business interests. Ivanka’s presence at meetings with world leaders certainly could be seen as an attempt to influence policy to benefit her businesses, and there is evidence to suggest that President Trump’s decision to honor the longstanding one China policy was a result of China awarding him a valuable trademark. Then there was the time Kellyanne Conway basically gave Ivanka free advertising during an interview, a possible violation of government ethics law. Her father has also tried to use Twitter to punish stores that drop Ivanka’s products.
In fact, Trump’s conflicts of interest as president are substantial enough to merit a running list to keep track of them all. As a businessman, Trump has a history both of using shady practices to avoid taxes, and of shortchanging or refusing to pay contractors and employees. In addition to her current tax troubles, Ivanka’s company has also been involved in a breach of contract dispute for refusing to pay a company for services rendered. She lost that case and was ordered to pay a $2.4 million settlement.
The latest tax lien is evidence of how the Trump family seems to function: by ignoring the rules that most Americans live by.
