Case of 11 Kids Found Starving at Compound Takes a Dark Turn

11 Children Found Starving in Secret Compound — Then Case Takes Dark New Twist

The Case of a Missing Child has Turned into a Bizarre Tale of Horrifying Child Abuse, Extremist Beliefs and Plans for Violence

The news that 11 children were found starving and thirsty, being held at a secret compound in New Mexico, was shocking enough. But as more is being learned about that compound and those who held the children captive, the true depths of the horror is becoming clear.

As CNN reports, last Friday, authorities raided the compound while searching for a missing Georgia child named Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj, who had been missing for nine months. It was believed that he was abducted by his father, Siraj Wahhaj, one of five adults found holed up in the compound. Abdul-Ghani was not found at the scene.

And then the weirdness begins.

For starters, it has been revealed that Siraj is the son of a controversial hardline Islamic Imam from New York City, also named Siraj. The other adults at the compound were his two sisters, his brother-in-law and his wife.  The 11 children were grandkids of the elder Siraj. The Imam had put out a plea on Facebook on January 4 for information on the whereabouts of his children and grandchildren.

Although Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj was not found at the compound, Abdul-Ghani’s mother claims that Siraj abducted the boy so that he could give him an exorcism. The child had a history of health problems, including seizures and therefore Siraj believed he was possessed by demons.

Now, it has been further revealed that Siraj Wahhaj was training the malnourished children on the compound to carry out future school shootings. As ABC News reports, prosecutors made the allegations after a foster parent to one of the children who were found told the police that he had “trained the child in the use of an assault rifle in preparation for future school shootings.” The defense attorney for the five adults disputes the claim.

The New Mexico compound had a number of weapons, a shooting range and booby traps and barriers set up. It had no water or electricity, was surrounded by garbage, tires and trenches. The remains of a child has been found at the compound but has not yet been identified, but there are fears that the body is that of Abdul-Ghani.
