Trump’s Mile High Meltdown: Russian News Sets Him Off on Air Force One

There is a classic episode of “The Twilight Zone” featuring William Shatner, “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet.” Shatner plays a man driven to the brink of insanity by a gremlin outside the plane hellbent on sabotage.  Air Force One was likely at a higher altitude en-route to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Thursday. Still, President Trump allegedly had a meltdown anyway. And yes, it was over a gremlin. This one works at the FBI and is trying to sabotage Trump’s plan to discredit the Mueller investigation. According to numerous people with knowledge of the event, Trump erupted when he learned that Associate Attorney General Stephen Boyd warned the House Intelligence Committee and Chairman Devin Nunes that it would be “extremely reckless” to publicly release the memo Nunes drafted. It appears the pressure of the investigation into Trump’s possible collusion with Russia is taking a toll.

Trump Just Lost it on Air Force One

The high-altitude tantrum capped a busy week for Trump and his team. Maybe team is not the right word? Muscle? Enforcers? Extortionists? White House Chief of Staff John Kelly had already spent time Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday on the telephone with Senior Justice Department officials. Kelly was both conveying President Trump’s displeasure with the Justice Department’s performance and reinforcing the expectations the White House holds. It has been reported that Kelly has now ends these seemingly daily calls with a disclaimer: The White House isn’t expecting officials to do anything illegal or unethical. Matthew Miller, MSNBC’s Justice & Security Analyst, warned that Kelly is getting perilously close to interfering with a federal investigation and questions why White House Counsel Don McGahn is not a party on these calls?

does the mafia from russia have a new york accent too?

Maybe it is just the story about Trump touting “my guys” or folks doing “his bidding?” Or maybe it was West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin excusing Trump’s threats against Mueller as “New York Talk?” But when I read about John Kelly’s disclaimer, my first though was of the mafia. “That sure is a nice Justice Department you got there. Be a damn shame if something bad were to happen to it.”

Today,  Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, who filled-in after James Comey was fired and  who was a frequent Trump target, resigned from the bureau. This comes on the heels of reports Trump attempted to fire Special Counsel Mueller last summer. At around the same time, Trump pressed his senior aides to launch a smear-campaign to discredit other senior FBI officials.

Recent meltdown aside, Trump maintains that the entire Russia talk is fake news. He also denied reports he sought to fire Mueller early in the Russia investigation. “Fake news, folks. Fake news. Typical New York Times fake stories.”
