New York Mayor Accused of Illegal Emigration — Is Trump Targeting his Critics?

President Trump’s “Zero Tolerance” policy for migrants who crossed the border outside of the accepted checkpoints, which included separating families who may well have been legitimate refugees, and detaining children in cages away from their parents, caused a huge outcry. Facing a giant wave of negative publicity, and the enormous public backlash to the heartless policy, President Trump first tried to dishonestly blame the whole thing on Democrats.

Trying to gaslight the press, and the public into placing the blame on the minority party, Trump tried to twist the blame onto Democrats for not supporting republican legislation, such as spending taxpayer funds to build the border wall (which Trump promised voters Mexico would pay for). Then, cracking under the pressure, Trump signed an order on June 20th, to end the family separations for border crossers.

The next day, twenty U.S. mayors traveled to the border between Texas and Mexico to assess the situation for themselves, including the Mayor of New York, Bill De Blasio, a high profile critic of the President. However the New York City Mayor was denied entry to a facility holding immigrant children. And now Border Protection has accused De Blasio of breaking U.S. (and Mexican) laws by crossing the border briefly, to take photos of the detention center near El Paso, Texas.

According to a letter obtained by the Associated Press sent by the Chief Patrol Agent of the Border Patrol for the El Paso Sector, Aaron Hull, on June 25th to Commissioner James O’Neill of the New York Police Department, the Mayor’s party, which included his security detail of New York police officers, ignored the request of a border patrol agent who told them they’d broken the law and told them to wait for his supervisor.

Which, according to De Blasio spokesman Eric Phillips, De Blasio did because the party already had the border patrol supervisor’s permission.

“The mayor crossed the border with the direct approval and under the supervision of the border patrol supervisor at this port of entry,” Phillips said, “Any suggestion otherwise is a flat-out lie and an obvious attempt by someone to attack the Mayor because of his advocacy for families being ripped apart at the border by the Trump Administration.”

Of course, you would expect a politician’s spokesperson to come to their defense, offering an explanation that exonerates their boss, but in this case Phillips’ argument makes logical sense, and rings disturbingly true. There is little logical reason to level such a frivolous accusation against any US citizen for briefly and barely crossing into mexico for the sake of doing their job, even without explicit permission from the border patrol.

But to level such an accusation against a top Democrat who could conceivably be among the challengers to run against the President in 2020? To accuse a high profile critic of the President, and the family separation policy, and thus, the Border Protection agency carrying it out? That really does seem like an “obvious attempt by someone to attack the Mayor” for being an opponent of Trump, and a critic of the family separation policy, and by extension, the agencies carrying it out.
