Hillary Lands One More Huge Endorsement From Another GOP Stalwart

We are teetering perilously close to the point in this election campaign where a major Republican endorsing Hillary Clinton for president is so commonplace that it may not even be deemed newsworthy. That said, Tuesday’s announcement from former Secretary of State Colin Powell that he intends to support the Democratic candidate instead of Donald Trump in next month’s contest is still very big news. Prior to this election cycles an endorsement of this nature was virtually unprecedented but as we have said countless times in recent weeks and months, this is no ordinary election.

Speaking at a lunch in Long Island, NY on Tuesday afternoon, the GOP stalwart articulated why he will endorse Clinton rather than Trump next month. The former member of George W. Bush’s cabinet explained the rationale behind his decision by describing Trump as someone who:

“insults us everyday, and is selling people a bill of goods”.

Powell, who previously refused to publicly endorse either candidate despite being extremely critical of Donald Trump, has decided to publicly back Clinton. He follows an increasingly significant number of Republicans from the George W. Bush administration who have now given their support to the Democratic nominee ahead of this November’s election. As per the Huffington Post this group includes former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, Bush’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board Chairman Brent Scowcroft, former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage.

On top of that, fellow GOP heavyweights affiliated with the Bush administration have also refused to endorse their party’s candidate this time around. This includes Bush’s mother, and former first lady Barbera Bushhis brother, GOP presidential candidate and former Governor of Florida Jeb Bush; and Arizona senator and former Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

Powell’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton is huge as it signifies another leading GOP stalwart who rather support a thirty-year political opponent than risk having Donald Trump as president. That says it all really.
