‘Hang them all’: deeply insecure Trump mocks Pence on evangelical views to show ‘who’s boss’

Trump Likes To Let Pence Know Who Is Boss

It seems as though the relationship between Donald Trump and his VP Mike Pence is strained. Trump, apparently, often belittles Mike Pence’s religious views, and the two seem to have fundamental differences when it comes to such hot-button topics as gay rights and abortion rights.

As it becomes more apparent that Donald Trump’s presidency is crumbling before our very eyes, a President Mike Pence becomes more and more likely. With that in mind, the New Yorker published a piece entitled The Danger of President Pence on Monday, warning Americans that, although President Trump is a menace to global society, a President Pence poses his own very real, substantial threats, as well.

But one stunning aspect of the piece published by the New Yorker, one of Trump’s many media targets, is the tense relationship between President Trump and his VP. According to one source, Trump’s insecurities and general abrasiveness make him want to “let Pence know who’s boss.” The nastiness coming from Trump to his vice president is in spite of the vice president’s obvious, and sometimes almost painful, fawning over the president. But because Trump is so incredibly transparent in his motives, the reason why is evident, as the New Yorker observes:

“Pence has taken care to appear extraordinarily loyal to Trump, so much so that Joel K. Goldstein, a historian and an expert on Vice-Presidents who teaches law at St. Louis University, refers to him as the ‘Sycophant-in-Chief.’ But Pence has the political experience, the connections, the discipline, and the ideological mooring that Trump lacks. He also has a close relationship with the conservative billionaire donors who have captured the Republican Party’s agenda in recent years.”

In other words, Trump’s insecurities drive him to take jabs at his own vice president.

‘Did Mike Make You Pray?’

Trump also jabs at his VP over his Christian faith, although Trump himself is the darling of the evangelicals. Still, that doesn’t stop him from asking people, “Did Mike make you pray?” as they leave meetings with the Vice President.

And during one meeting, when the topic turned to LGBTQ rights, Trump made a stunningly sharp jab at his Vice President, excluding him from participation in the meeting because of Pence’s own volatile relationship with the LGBTQ community.

According to one source, Trump pointed to his VP, and said jokingly, “Don’t ask that guy — he wants to hang them all!”

Not very funny when it’s basic human rights that are the things hanging in balance and the people in power seem determined to do what they can to eliminate those rights.

The New Yorker also reports that Trump openly mocks Pence for his view on abortion, calling Pence’s work towards stripping women of their rights a “waste of time” after a legal scholar informed the two that if Roe v. Wade is overturned, many states would simply legalize abortion.

“You see?” Trump said to Pence. “You’ve wasted all this time and energy on it, and it’s not going to end abortion anyway.”

Wonder what the evangelical crowd will make of that?

Still, the New Yorker points out a chilling fact. As much as Trump is a menace, a bumbling, ignorant, ill-informed, bellicose, hair-trigger fool with no moral compass and lacking even a basic grasp of global matters, Mike Pence isn’t much better. Oh, he has a much firmer grasp on world affairs, and his hair is definitely better, and he does have a “moral compass.” But when one’s moral compass leads to stripping LGBTQ people and women of their rights, all in the name of God, it’s not very comforting.
