GOP Leadership Sworn To Secrecy

Transcripts released by the Washington Post shows that GOP leadership, including Paul Ryan, provide unique and troubling insight into how Republican lawmakers viewed the relationship between Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin, during the 2016 presidential campaign.

There is no doubt that GOP leadership within Congress knew there was a connection between their candidate and Putin. And they were actually concerned about that connection.

But the GOP leadership wanted to keep their concerns secret.

The bulk of the conversation took place between House Speaker Paul Ryan, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and Majority Whip Steve Scalise. All admitted that Putin-led Russia financed populists, and that Putin had a very sophisticated propaganda machine. In fact, Ryan called it sophisticated and “maniacal.”

Then this core group within Republican leadership laughed over Russia’s hacking of the Democratic National Committee, and Putin’s gathering of opposition research against Hillary Clinton.

And then McCarthy dropped this bombshell.

“There’s two people I think Putin pays: [California Republican Dana] Rohrabacher and Trump.”

At that point, Paul Ryan stopped all conversation and made all members swear themselves to secrecy. Sounding like some sort of mob boss rather than the leader of the Republican party, Ryan said, “No leaks. This is how we know we’re a real family here.”

NOt Even Bad ‘Jokes’ Require Sworn Secrecy

Paul Ryan’s counselor Brendan Buck pushed back against the report, stating that McCarthy was joking .

But even bad jokes don’t typically require those who hear it to swear to secrecy.

The GOP leadership knew there was a deep and troubling connection between their presidential candidate and a hostile foreign power that was openly attacking our democratic system through hacking and propaganda…

And they covered for him.

These people are not patriots. That their own candidate was being bolstered by a hostile foreign power was of less concern than making sure there was a person who would rubber stamp their regressive policies in the White House. And, in the days to come, they should not be allowed to forget it.
