Dan Rather Takes On White House Media Ban: ‘The Reckoning Has Come’ (VIDEO)
Dan Rather Confronts White House Press Ban
Dan Rather has become a strong, eloquent voice of reason in what seems like a very unreasonable time. His tireless defense of democracy, and his frequent reminders to America to not normalize this very abnormal presidency, have again made him a leading voice in our country.
On Friday, Dan Rather confronted the shocking attack on the First Amendment by the White House, both on Facebook and on television. Soon after the White House banned a group of reputable media outlets, including CNN, the Hill, the New York Times and the LA Times, from an informal press briefing, Dan Rather came out in strong defense of the media.
“The time for normalizing, dissembling, and explaining away Donald Trump has long since passed,” Mr. Rather wrote. “The barring of respected journalistic outlets from the White House briefing is so far beyond the norms and traditions that have governed this republic for generations, that they must be seen as a real and present threat to our democracy. These are the dangers presidents are supposed to protect against, not create.”
And make no mistake. That the White House banned the press from a press briefing is a threat to our democracy. This is the first step in media control. Because the White House doesn’t like what is being reported, they are simply removing those outlets which they deem as unfavorable. But let’s be clear about what this is, and what this isn’t.
This isn’t about these outlets producing “fake news,” because they don’t. This is about the White House trying to suppress the truth, simply because it casts them in an unfavorable light.
‘The Reckoning Has Come’
Dan Rather continued, saying that for those who have turned a blind eye to Trump’s extreme rhetoric, “the reckoning has come.”
“For all who excused Mr. Trump’s rhetoric in the campaign as just talk, the reckoning has come. I hope it isn’t true, but I fear Mr. Trump is nearing or perhaps already beyond any hope of redemption. And now the question is will enough pressure be turned to all those who enable his antics with their tacit encouragement. There has been a wall of unbending support from virtually every Republican in Congress, and even some Democrats. Among many people, this will be seen as anything approaching acceptable. And mind you, talk is cheap. No one needs to hear how you don’t agree with the President. What are you going to do about it? Do you maintain that an Administration that seeks to subvert the protections of our Constitution is fit to rule unchecked? Or fit to rule at all?
“This is an emergency that can no longer be placed solely at the feet of President Trump, or even the Trump Administration. This is a moment of judgement for everyone who willingly remains silent. It is gut check time, for those in a position of power, and for the nation.”
The First Amendment was established for a reason. And now it is under open attack.
Dan Rather: ‘I Would Have Walked Out Of The Room’
Later on Friday, Dan Rather appeared with Chris Matthews on MSNBC’s Hardball. During his interview, Rather explained that the White House is trying a rather obvious divide and conquer strategy with the media.
“We understand what’s going on,” Rather said. “It’s an effort to divide amongst themselves. I don’t think it’s going to work. We have never seen anything like this in the White House. Even during the worse of the Nixon period. We didn’t see this kind of thing happening on any basis.”
As for what he would have done himself, had he been present, Dan Rather says he would have simply walked out.
“A great deal of this is calculated and it’s a kind of smoke screen,” Rather continued. “It takes away from stories like what did happen between candidate Trump, and for that matter President Trump, and Russian intelligence. Did anything happen or not? A lot of this is designed to throw over the coverage of the important stories and having us talk about press access. Make no mistake about it, this is going to continue. President Trump thinks he is winning a so-called information war. We’ll see as it goes along.”
With voices as clear and ringing as Dan Rather, among other journalists who are rising to the occasion, there is little chance Trump can win this war. Not if we don’t let him.
