Joe Arpaio, America’s ‘Toughest’, Most Despised Sheriff May Soon End Up Behind Bars

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio Charged With Criminal Contempt

The United States Department of Justice officially filed criminal charges against Maricopa County’s infamous Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Tuesday. The re-election prospects for “Americas Toughest Sheriff” just got worse as he will face contempt-of-court charges that could bring up to six months in jail. Polls have shown him far behind his Democratic opponent and these official charges will certainly not help him.

The charges were brought because Arpaio violated a 2011 order stopping his anti-immigrant patrols. Arpaio has pled not guilty and claims his violation of the order was purely unintentional. The sheriff apparently expects the public to follow all laws appropriately, but does not hold himself to the same standard.

POLITICO reports he will not be arrested and no mugshots will be taken. Arpaio will be able to continue serving as sheriff even if he is convicted on the misdemeanor charge.

His election opponent jumped on the report:

Democratic challenger Paul Penzone said Arpaio, through his acts of political defiance, has no one to blame but himself for the charge. “It’s another example of the sheriff putting his own personal objectives ahead of the best interest of the community at our expense,” Penzone said.

Penzone hits the nail on the head when he talks about the interest of the community. Defending the sheriff’s questionable actions has already reached tens of millions of dollars and will cost the taxpayers a staggering $72 million by next summer. A recent poll by the Arizona Republic/Morrison/Kronkite News showed Penzone leading Arpaio by 15 points.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio rose to fame by humiliating human beings in his jail for committing the heinous crime of wanting to find a better life for themselves. Consequently, a frightening number of those folks have committed suicide at rates that massively dwarf the vast majority of jails around the country. Lately, he has spent his time stumping for Republican standard bearer Donald Trump and refusing to let the birther myth die. Clearly, you can’t teach an old dog old facts.

Even if karma were to finally catch up with Sheriff Joe Arpaio and he ended up behind bars, it certainly won’t be the last we hear from him. His popularity with the far right is too great at this point for him to lose his prominence with conservatives. A lost election and a criminal conviction would just be a steppingstone to what would likely be his next job: a Fox News commentator.
