They Screwed The Pope: Why Was Vatican ‘Blindsided’ By Kim Davis Meeting?

(…continued) In allowing this story to happen (and Pope Francis to look bad by association), Vigano has earned quite a bit of backlash. Progressive Catholic organization Faithful America circulated a message to its followers about Vigano’s handling of the Kim Davis story. The organization also created a petition calling for his resignation.

“According to press reports, one man was likely responsible for Davis’s invitation: Carlo Maria Vigano, a conservative church official who was appointed by Pope Benedict as Vatican ambassador to the United States (formally called the “apostolic nuncio”). Having created an opportunity for right-wing evangelicals to dishonestly hijack the message of the pope’s visit to the United States, Vigano must now resign. Tell Vatican ambassador: Letting Kim Davis hijack the pope’s visit was wrong. Resign for the good of the church. Many of us were upset and confused when the news broke that Pope Francis had met with Kim Davis — especially given how she and her lawyers misrepresented what actually happened at the Vatican embassy. …Carlo Maria Vigano was appointed apostolic nuncio by Pope Benedict, and there have been indications before that he and Pope Francis are not on the same page. For example, earlier this year Francis forced Kansas City Bishop Robert Finn to resign after Finn was convicted of covering up clergy sexual abuse. Despite this, Vigano allowed Finn to continue ordaining priests until a new bishop was appointed. Vigano was almost certainly involved in inviting Kim Davis to the Vatican embassy reception where she met with Pope Francis, and he may even have acted alone. Either way, he has no business continuing to serve as Francis’s official representative to the United States.

Regardless of what Vigano did or did not intend, the Vatican was left with no choice but to hit back (and hard) at anyone trying to float a political and social alliance between the Rowan County, Ky. clerk and His Holiness. Lombardi made the statement discrediting Kim Davis’s version of events to the New York Times Friday morning. Within a few hours of his remarks, reports (and images) began to circulate that Pope Francis had a private meeting with a gay couple. These actions pretty much shut down any future shenanigans by Kim Davis, the Liberty Counsel, or any other individuals who with a part to play in this story.

To gain further insight on this bizarre turn of events, I briefly spoke with Christopher Hale, the Executive Director at Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good. Hale expressed a great deal of skepticism at the idea of the pontiff going out of his way to behave in such a blatantly partisan manner.

“Pope Francis meets with people every day he disagrees with,” said Hale. He strongly disagreed with the idea that a meeting, even a private one, is somehow “proof” that the pope champions any particular cause. He also referred to the “Kim Davis narrative” about what she claims happened “is false.” Hale believes what happened is that Davis and her allies attempted to use the pope to play “political football.” Pope Francis is understandably not a fan of being used by others in such a way.

Although I was growing skeptical that the Vatican would actually respond with their version of events at the alleged meeting, Hale made it clear that all that was needed was for the Vatican to officially catch-up with and fully understand the story being circulated. Once that happened, we were provided a version of events that makes much more sense than what the Liberty Counsel and their client Kim Davis provided.

For most Americans, this story will simply be the not-so-little-white-lie that blew up in Kim Davis’s face. However, there is an element to this story that suggests the Liberty Counsel has some connections if it was able to pull this incident off in the first place.

It also means this might not also be the last time we hear about Pope Francis being pulled into the middle of something that makes him look questionable or undermines his image as pope. So knowing there are those out there who’d love to tarnish that image, or perhaps polish up their own, we should always bear that possibility in mind, in the future.
