Pope Francis Chastises ‘Immoral’ Donald Trump Over Separating Families

The Spiritual Leader of Over One Billion People Proclaimed Trump’s Immigration Policies To Be ‘Contrary To Our Catholic Values’

Pope Francis became the latest high profile leader to denounce President Donald Trump’s “Zero Tolerance” immigration policy, which has come under global scrutiny as images of young children behind chain-linked fences in federal facilities begin to surface, and horror stories continue to be told. The brand new policy forcibly separates children from their parents as they cross the border and is increasingly being compared to “concentration camps” by analysts and journalists.

Speaking to Reuters, the Pope said he supported recent statements by U.S. Catholic bishops who called the separation of children from their parents “contrary to our Catholic values” and “immoral”.

“It’s not easy, but populism is not the solution,” Francis said on Sunday night.

One of his most pointed messages concerned President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance immigration policy, in which U.S. authorities plan to criminally prosecute all immigrants caught crossing the Mexican border illegally, holding adults in jail while their children are sent to government shelters.

The policy has caused an outcry in the United States and has been condemned abroad as videos emerged of youngsters held in concrete-floored enclosures and an audio of wailing children went viral.

U.S. Catholic bishops have joined other religious leaders in the United States in condemning the policy.

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops sharply criticized Trump’s policy for its impact on families last week, saying in a statement:

“Families are the foundational element of our society and they must be able to stay together. While protecting our borders is important, we can and must do better as a government, and as a society, to find other ways to ensure that safety. Separating babies from their mothers is not the answer and is immoral.”

Pope Francis is not the only religious leader to weigh in on the controversial policy, which has been met with disgust by an overwhelming majority of Americans. Evangelist Franklin Graham — inexplicably a Trump ally — called the measure “disgraceful” and added that he didn’t “support it one bit”. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who implemented the policy, was charged by over 600 leaders and congregants of the United Methodist Church for violating church teachings.

Imagine that. Christians decided that it’s immoral and disgraceful to punish refugee families by taking children away from their parents. Why, it’s almost as if they’ve read the teachings of Jesus Christ.
